EUDR – The EU Deforestation Regulation

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR 2023/1115) is an important milestone at European level in significantly curbing global deforestation. The regulation has been in force since 29 June 2023 and will be binding for large companies from 30 December 2025. The European Union is pursuing clear goals with this regulation: to combat climate change effectively and actively protect our planet's biodiversity.

What does the EUDR actually mean?

Companies will only be allowed to offer, supply or place certain raw materials and products made from them on the EU market (the EUDR regulates imports into the EU market) if they can be proven to have been produced without deforestation and in compliance with the EUDR. This means that the agricultural land on which these raw materials are obtained must not have been cleared after 31 December 2020. This is an important step towards placing the focus on ecologically responsible behaviour.

Which products are the focus?

This affects seven key raw materials and all products made from them:

  • Wood and wood products (e.g. paper, packaging, etc.)
  • Rubber (e.g. tyres)
  • Cocoa (e.g. chocolate)
  • Coffee
  • Oil palm (e.g. palm oil)
  • Soya (e.g. soya flour)
  • Cattle (e.g. beef, cowhide)

Who is affected by the EUDR?

The regulation applies to all companies that place these products on the EU market for the first time or export them, regardless of their size. In addition to manufacturers and importers, distributors who resell these products within the EU are also included, albeit with simplified requirements.

Why is this important to us at CEWE?

As a company that is aware of its social responsibility, environmental protection and sustainable business practices are particularly important to us. We see the EUDR not only as a mandatory requirement, but also as an opportunity to work with our partners to make a real contribution to protecting forests and promoting sustainable production. We are actively committed to transparency, fairness and environmental protection – out of conviction and with a view to future generations.

Transparency as a core value: the DDS number

To ensure that a product actually complies with EUDR requirements, companies must submit a due diligence statement. After successful verification, they receive an individual DDS reference number from the official EU TRACES system. This serves as digital proof that the product has been manufactured in a deforestation-free manner and complies with EUDR.

Transmission and request of DDS numbers

Sustainability and transparency in the supply chain are top priorities for CEWE. We consistently implement the relevant requirements within the framework of the EUDR.

If you, as a business partner, would like to send your DDS numbers to CEWE, you can do so easily by clicking on the button below. The button automatically copies our EUDR contact address (eudr@cewe.de), which you can use to send your delivery notes and the corresponding DDS numbers directly to us.
